A Vision of Old Fort Mac: A Poem
Milestones Vol 13 No. 1
A Vision Of Old Ft. Mac: a Poem
One day I wandered along in Beaver
Down by the River Road,
I watched the river barges
Struggle to push a load.
Meandering along the river bluff
I stopped to read a plaque.
In fascination I learned I stood
On the ruins of old Ft. Mac.
My feet now were on hollowed ground
Where soldiers once had trod,
I could see our General McIntosh
As he reviewed the frontier squad.
Houses of today vanished as
Ft. Mac came into my view.
Indians in all their splendor
Came on foot and in canoe.
It was here in Beavertown
In Seventeen-eighty five,
Ft. Mac had signed a treaty
With them for Westward drive.
A permanent Army garrison then
Carved by soldiers brave and tough,
With the ghost of old Ft. McIntosh
Still lingers on that bluff.
