Henry Hice was Beaver Cemetery's first Secretary, being a young attorney at the time. Hice, of German parentage, was born in Hopewell Township in 1834. He began the study of law in 1857 with Colonel Richard P. Roberts of Beaver, who we also discussed while at the Chapel, and, after being admitted to the bar in 1859 became Roberts' partner. Hice was appointed as the first President Judge of a newly-created 36th Judicial District in 1874, serving in that capacity until 1885. Following the death of his first wife in 1872, Hice married Mrs. Sarah H. Minis, daughter of Chief Justice Daniel Agnew of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Hice is perhaps best known for his work with the Harmony Society, serving for many years as its legal advisor. He was also prominently associated with the establishment of The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, and closely connected with many of the most important business enterprises of Beaver County during the latter part of the last century. Hice died in 1905, and is buried at the grave site now being called to your attention.
