SITE NO. 6

OLD SHARON BOAT YARD

(Located on the river front between Old Sharon Bridge and the mouth of Brady's Run.)

The modern town of Bridgewater was the result of a consolidation, in 1868, of two separate boroughs; Sharon to the north extended to Brady's Run, while Bridgewater to the south had the Ohio River as its southern boundary. For years after the erection of the new borough, the name Sharon continued to be used in common parlance.

Old Sharon was the site of a Roat Yard in which some of Aaron Burr's "Orleans Boats" were constructed during the years 1805-1806 to carry supplies for his proposed expedition to conquer Texas from Mexico. The marine ways stood on the Beaver River front between the old Sharon Bridge and the mouth of Brady's Run.

The expedition was terminated with Aaron Burr's arrest for treason. He was tried in a court at Richmond, Virginia and found not guilty.
