History Lessons for Elementary Students

A Short Lesson in Early Native American Life

in Beaver County

Since you are studying Native American life, here is a little about that culture in Beaver County.

Here is how some tribes built their houses:

What do you think they are covering the lodge with?

The earliest people in Beaver County were Monongahela People who lived here more than 6,000 years ago. An excavation site in Ohioville has uncovered what information we have about them. But they suddenly disappeared in the 1600's. Historians have found few clues about their disappearance.

What do you think could have led to this mysterious situation?

Have your teacher show you where Ohioville is and what was found there.

On the north bank of the Ohio, between Glasgow and Midland, a vast display of picture-carvings was discovered by early visitors to the county. It is believed by many that the Monongahela People created these carvings. Others believe a later people, the Deleware Nation, made these drawings. Here are two of these drawings that are now covered by the water of the New Cumberland Dam.

If you were to make a rock drawing, what would you put on it?

Take some time now and design your rock drawing. Your teacher will give you more details about this project.

That is the end of this lesson. The next lesson will look at tribes which settled in Vanport, Bridgewater, and Beaver.
