Beaver County Soldiers and Sailors Monuments
Milestones Vol 13 No 2 Summer 1988

For almost two years a small committee has been raising money to restore The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, located in McIntosh Square, directly across from the Courthouse. The monument was erected in 1900 to honor Beaver County's Veterans.

The project was started two years ago, when it was agreed that because of weather and vandalism, the four statues needed to be restored. County-wide citizens and representatives of Beaver County government and the Borough of Beaver make up the committee.

Almost $32,000 of the $38,000 needed has been raised through contributions from hundreds of individuals, Veterans' groups, service organizations, private corporations, the county, and the Borough of Beaver. School children have also given through a Bowl-AThon sponsored by local police.

$6,000 is still needed, and contributions are still being accepted.

Contributions may be made payable to: THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MONUMENT FUND. And mailed to: OFFICE OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, Courthouse, Beaver, PA 15009.

To date, contributions have been received from as far away as Alaska and Florida.

The statues are being restored by artisans who work at the D Leo Sign Company. Dominic Leo, himself an artist, visited a number of locations in the Washington, D.C. area and talked with knowledgeable people in the field of monument restoration. Mr. Leo is located in Aliquippa and is well known in the area. He recently completed the first of the four statues and an unveiling of the figure was held in November of 1987.

Committee Members include: Dr. Joseph McFarland, Dr. William Bauer, Mr. David Otto, Mr. James Ellis, Mrs. Lillian Clark, Mrs. Vivian McLaughlin, The Honorable Ralph Scalera, Mr. Louis Uihlein, Mayor Robert Linn, Mr. Louis Danneker, Mr. William Bechdel, Mr. Robert Robinson, County Commissioners: Gerald LaValle, Roger Javens and James Alberts; also on the committee are: Betty Steege, John Grant and Mary Wytiaz.

A re-dedication is being planned for July 4 in the early evening.
