1870's Fashions

Milestones Vol. 12. No. 3--Fall 1987

WOMAN'S DRESS. ABOUT 1875

Hair: The hair has a fringe in front and a chignon worn low,with its coils extending a little way up the back of the head.

Garments: The down of black velvet has a hiplength fitted bodice fastening in front with silver buttons and ending in a deep point. Double rows of black velvet pleats edge its base. Two rows of the pleating placed end to end and bound in the centre by a band of velvet, decorate the under-skirt and edge the close-fitting three-quarter-length sleeves. The high collar has an opening in front and a narrow white neckfrill. The overskirt is lifted to the hips in apron fashion at the sides, the rest of the drapery being first bunched at the back over the sloping bustle and then dropped to form a train.

Footwear: The slippers are of black velvet.

Jewelry and Accssories: A folding fan is carried in the right hand. Pearl drop earrings and a pearl and silver brooch are worn.

 

MAN'S SUIT. 1871

Hair: The hair is parted on the left side and brought across the forehead in a quiff that turns upward on the right. The sides and back are short and are brushed outward a little above the ears.

Headdress: The low-crowned black bowler hat has a brim curving up slightly at the sides.

Garments: The jacket and trousers are of matching grey worsted. The shoulders are narrow, the lapels short and only the top button of the coat is fastened. The waistcoat is of a lighter grey. The trousers are rather loose-fitting and shapeless. The collar is starched, turned over and open in front to show the knotted tie.

Footwear: The blunt-toed laced boots are of black leather.

Accessories: A walking-stick is carried in the right hand.
