Scrubbing Street Cars
Milestones Vol 15 No 1 Spring 1990

In accord with the Health Boards against the spread of disease in 1908 from the unsanitary conditions of public buildings and vehicles, Superintendent Maxwell of the Beaver Valley Traction Company instituted a thorough and systematic plan of cleaning and disinfecting the street cards. A certain number of cars were scrubbed each night with a solution containing a strong disinfectant. The Traction Company deserved a lot of credit in their effort and cooperation with the Health authorities for their civic improvement. It was suggested that each town council in the Valley pass an ordinance forbidding spitting on sidewalks and in public buildings and vehicles attaching a heavy penalty for the violation. If this were done a filthy and dangerous habit could be eliminated. Only two or three of the towns at the time had such an ordinance, and the Traction Company traversed all of the towns making such a law ineffective.
