Milestones Vol 12 No 1--Spring 1987

The examination of the students in this institution will take place on Thursday and Friday the 23d and 24th inst., to which the Trustees are notified to attend and the friends of education, and the patrons of the institution are respectfully invited.

The Summer Session will commence on the 17th of April next, under the care of Mr. G.R. McMillen, who has been engaged to take charge of it in future.

NOTES FROM GREERSBURGH MINUTE BOOK

1806 Feb. 24th: Act Establishing Academy in town of Greersburgh authorized by General Assembly. To be called Greersburgh Academy - with 15 Trustees to govern it.

1806 June 3: A building to be erected on North end of Academy lot; to board students and steward.

William Daniels chosen Teacher of Languages - John Beer chosen steward.

Daniel Hayden Librarian and Rev. Thomas E. Hughes selected superintendent to oversee Library affairs of Academy.

Students to lodge in the Academy and board with steward.

1807 April: Workman hired to build the house.

Students no longer required to board with steward.

Rules drawn up to govern the trustees and academy.

1813 Dec.: Maybe another set of minutes in the book pertaining to town inhabitants of the town to superintend English school in the town.

List of students' names 1816 to 1823 1841 to 1843.

1816: Trustee's vote to sell one lot of ground #57. They own 56-57-58-128. Lot sold for $270.00 dollars.

1823-24: Teachers to receive $18.00 per student over 18 in number the full tuition to go to the teachers. Minutes skip to 1837

Rev. George Scott requested to lease Academy for one year.

1839: Trustees request General Assembly of State to reduce the number of Trustees from 15 to 7.

1840: Request granted - reduced to 9 instead of 7.

1841: Course of study drawn up to certify subjects being taught.

1844: A Library Society connected with Academy: they give public Oratorical Exhibitions.

1847: Committee ask to look into matter of the Academy having been sold for back taxes.

A Male and Female Department established.

Resolved - the Academy may be rented out for various kinds of meetings.

Feb. 1848: Lot sold for 107.75 dollars.

Reported the Academy was sold for taxes but the sale was not legal.

Female department discontinued.
