Policeman Shot At Aliquippa
News From The (Ambridge) Citizen - 1912
Milestones Vol 22 No 1 Spring 1997

Robert Brown, policeman of Aliquippa, is lying at his home with a bullet wound in his side and about 30 police officers of Beaver County, assisted by County Detective Copeland, have been on a man hunt for the past 24 hours.

Brown yesterday had been armed with a warrant for the arrest of John Doe, a Hungarian, who was wanted for a cutting affair at Horvath's Hotel Woodlawn.

The Woodlawn police also had a warrant and had gone to the hotel but he had slipped away and gone to Aliquippa.

Brown was standing at the corner of Beaver Avenue and Third Street when he saw the man approaching in company with another. As he came up to him, he laid his hand on his shoulder and said, "I want you,"

One of the two drew a revolver and fired, the bullet entering Brown's left side, a few inches below the heart.

The two started to run and Brown was able to empty his revolver after them but without effect it seemed.

Brown was taken to his home and Dr. W. D. Engle summoned. The bullet had came out at the back and it is thought the wound will not prove serious.

The alarm was given and officers from surrounding towns flocked in to assist in the hunt.

Chief Garber, of New Brighton, brought blood hounds, belonging to Mr. Feits, and they were placed on the trail which they followed to the river below town but there it was lost.

Several of the fellows associated with the man wanted for the shooting are being held as witnesses.

Editor's Note: Aliquippa and Woodlawn, combined in 1928, were separate communities in 1912.
