Lewis & Clark to Visit Beaver County this Summer

Milestones Vol 28. No. 2

Mark your calendars!

Plans are underway for a County-wide celebration of the Lewis & Clark National Bicentennial from August 31 through September 4 2003. The steering committee is busy planning a host of special events for this memorable "once in a lifetime" celebration. Everyone can participate!

Interactive school programs are being offered through the BCHR&L Foundation which include demonstrations, round-robins, and guest speakers. Programs are FREE and offered on a first come, first served basis. Programs can be tailored for a specific class or an entire school. Call the foundation office today to schedule a program.

In addition, county-wide poster and essay contests are currently underway for school-age students. Encourage your children or grandchildren to learn more about Lewis & Clark and creatively express their interpretation of this significant exploration. For complete details and contest rules, contact the BCHR&L office.

A grand event will occur when the Corp of Discovery 2 from St. Charles, Missouri, sails down the Ohio River and lands at Rochester Riverfront Park on September 1 for a community festival. Festival activities include reenactments and encampments, story-telling, musical presentations, period cooking demonstrations, historical log cabin exhibit, horse and buggy rides, a native plant and herb garden, flag program and presentation, and much more!! Festival hours are from noon until 3:00 p.m. each day. All activities are FREE and open to the public. Bring the entire family!! Tour the replicated pirogue (boats) that Lewis & Clark and the Corp of Discovery used in 1803-1806. Talk with the Discovery crew members from throughout the United States and learn about the many adventures and discoveries the crew uncovered in their travels through Beaver County and across the country.

If you'd like to participate in the many activities planned or wish to volunteer, call Brenda Applegate at the foundation office!! Be a part of history!! Join us at the Beaver County Lewis & Clark Community Festival at Rochester Riverfront Park.
