HOW CHRISTMAS WAS ENJOYED
DECEMBER 25,1903
Milestones Vol 11 No 4--Fall 1986

December 25,1903 was a model CHRISTMAS with the exception of the absence of snow, which appeared later in the evening and prevented the day from being entirely green. Order in towns was remarkably good and this was due, probably to the fact that the hotel proprietors closed the bars connected with their hotels and in consequence there were few intoxicated persons seen on the streets. CHRISTMAS services and treats to the members of the Sunday schools were held on CHRISTMAS eve at most of the churches and all of the services were largely attended. The sun came out and warmed the air during the afternoon and many people were on the streets making CHRISTMAS calls or enjoying the pleasant winter afternoon.

At St. Mary's Catholic Church services were held Dec. 24 and each of the masses was largely attended. The treat at the English Lutheran Church was held CHRISTMAS eve, and the church was scarcely large enough to hold the many friends of the children, who attended to witness the interesting program presented. Others who were more interested in worldly attractions attended dances and programs provided in all the area towns. On CHRISTMAS Eve a dance was held at the 6th Avenue Theatre by the employees of the theatre. The evening was spent tripping the light fantastic to the music of the theatre orchestra. The members of the Beaver Falls Turnverein held a reception and dance in their hall on 8th Street and the place was scarcely large enough to accommodate the crowd which attended. A musical and literary program was presented by the children of the members and the annual CHRISTMAS treat followed. The remainder of the evening was spent with music and dancing. The members of the Forest Club entertained their friends by holding a reception in the First National Bank Hall where the young folks of the valley spent CHRISTMAS EVE dancing to their favorite music. On CHRISTMAS Eve the "Prince of Pilsen" was presented to a crowded house at the Lyceum Theatre and CHRISTMAS Day "At Cripple Creek" played to good houses at the same place at both matinee and evening performances. The "Bowery Masqueraders" entertained an audience at the 6th Avenue Theatre CHRISTMAS Eve and the performers with the Company gave a very good show. There were dinners at a number of the clubs and house parties at many of the homes in town which made this a CHRISTMAS long to be remembered.
