A Review of Beaver Falls Businesses
in the 11th Street Block
of Seventh Avenue from 1922

 

In a review of business concerns located in the 11th Street block on Seventh Avenue, am greatly indebted to Bob Bonnage who has researched Beaver Falls history over his entire lifetime . . . and you can be quite sure that the information furnished by him will be close to 100 per cent right ... this information dates back to 1922 and is outlined by Mr. Bonnage as follows ... 1028, Farmers Bank location with Frank Brerly president and Walter Bert, cashier ... both are now deceased. . ; 1026, Paradise Confectionery, J. Dickos proprietor ... 1024, J. P. Thompson, Men's and Boys' Clothing ... 1022, G. C. Murphy, H. P. Ranke, manager ... 1018-1020, Purviance and Flinner, shoe store ... 1014 1016, the Berkman's store, Meyer is still residing in Beaver Falls ... recently marked his 80th birthday ... 1012, Peoples Store, with Ben Klein, manager ... 1010, Grand Theatre, J. H. Hayward, manager .. . 1008, R. G. Neely, florist, 1006, Beaver Valley Water Company main office, John T. Taylor, president, as far as can recall, believe Mrs. James Duff, a daughter of Mr. Taylor, is the only surviving member of that family ... 1004, Duff's College, Homer McLaughlin, manager ... 1000, Stuckey's Drug Store, Emil Stuckey, owner with the late Merle Raisley, chief pharmacist. . . remember Mr. Raisley well ... he was always very active in local Masonic circles and lived on College Hill ... in 1924 H. Farkas moved from 1015 to 1610, once the location of the Grand Theatre . . . in 1931 Josenh Blinn had a fruit store at the Old Farmers Bank location at 1028...... and later the Ben Friedman clothing store took and remodeled the room and was located there up to the time of Mr. Friedman's death ... in 1931 Roy Brierly had a hardware store at 004 Seventh Avenue and also in that year Ed Hipple had a pool hall at 1009 Seventh Avenue ... in 1927 Paul Reda ran his barbershop at 1006 and also the Beaver Falls Cash Market was at 1022 Seventh Avenue managed by J. Teitelbaum ... naturally most of these places have been replaced by other stores ... which now include the updated and modernized Enelow Shoes ... Allan Jewelers ... Sherwin-Williams ... L and N Gift Shop ... Household Finance office ... Sol's Stores ... Singer, Deane and Scribner and a new restaurant ... the Chef House - former location of the Nanette Shop -.'. . now crossing over to the west side, starting at 11th Street, the same year 1922, we had the Federal Title and , Trust Company, with C., W. Klein as president and Walter Potts as cashier ... the Dime Savings and Loan was also located in with the bank ... this bank was the only one that failed to resume business in full after the bank holiday in 1932 ... it was proven later that the bank was sound financially for it paid out 100 per cent all monies that had been deposited by the bank customers ... at 1024, Central Pharmacy, operated by D. F. R. McCready ... 1023, the E. H. Schaefer Jewelry, both father and son now deceased ... then was National Shoe Company, with A. J. Miller, manager, 1019, there was the Neward Shoe Store, C. Balkman, manager . . .1017 , Bill Racco ran a shoe repair shop. ... 1017, the late Charlie Mann opened and operated his jewelry store ... 1015, Harry Farkas ran a grocery store ... he also had a store in New Brighton ... at 1013, the Western Union Telegraph office was located with F. J. Boulter, manager ... believe that Boulter had two sons enter the priesthood ... 1011, the New York Restaurant was operated by L. Chippas, J. Pappas and S. Nakas ... 1009, this was the location of the Comet theatre . . was vacated but on the second floor, Sturgeon and Wallace had their Grandview Cemetery office ... 1007, George Calvin operated a billiard parlor ... 1005, Hummel and Hetzler operated their newsstand ... at 1003 there was another New York restaurant ... two being in this block ... on the corner at 1001 was a house owned by Mrs. M. A. Tozen ... and later in 1930 it was turned into the Pittsburgh Farmers Fruit Market ... now it's a parking lot . . there have been many changes on this side for later quite a few of the old buildings gave way to the new Sahli Bldg., many new tenants, including the executive offices of the Townsend Company, the Sahli' Development Company, Beneficial Finance System, Monumental Life Insurance office ... Dr. Thomas M. Baldwin, Mildred's Beauty Shop, the downtown office of the Western Pennsylvania National Bank ... ,also in this block are the State Liquor Store . Miller and White Furniture Store ... Edrie McKee's Shop for Ladies . . . Zingaro Yarn Shop ... Eazor's newsstand and the City Restaurant ... now we trust we haven't missed anyone ... there have been many changes -over the years in this particular section of the city ... slips that pass in the newspapers occasionally'. . . a news story from New York stated that two dozen policemen had been indicted on charges of receiving brides from gamblers . . . it should have been receiving bribes ... amounting to approximately a million dollars ... don't know which would be the most acceptable ... the policemen did take the money ... noted that Bishop Roy C. Nichols of the Pittsburgh Area United Methodist Church will be given honorary award by Duquesne University . . quite sure this is one award that will be greatly appreciated ... according to reports out of Washington that price reductions will be forthcoming by July 1st, in grocery lines, motels, television, autos and some clothing lines ... the consumer will be interested we are sure ... tomorrow is Sunday ... are you planning to attend church ... let us hope that you give one hour of your time to attending the church of your choice ... and here's trusting that your weekend will be pleasant and enjoyable ...
