On May 30, 1938, as thousands of spectators lined both banks of the Beaver River, the Big Beaver Boat Club, headquartered at 19th Street, New Brighton, hosted speedboat races staged by the Mid-East Outboard Association. Seventy-nine entrants from as far as Detroit, MI and Ft. Wayne, IN participated in five races run on a course stretching from the mouth of Blockhouse Run to the Fallston Bridge. The event was part of the celebration of the centennial of the incorporation of the town of New Brighton.
