Ladies Auxiliary to the Vanport Volunteer Fire Department

Twenty ladies met on November 14, 1938 and with the help of Mrs. Nellie Cain and Mrs. Belle Snyder from Monaca, organized the auxiliary.

First president was Mary Hurst; vice president, Susan Myers; secretary, Mildred Dailey; assistant secretary, Alice Milliken; treasurer, Gertrude Eller and assistant treasurer, Gertrude Ambersen.

Associate members today are Mrs. Gertrude Eller, Mrs. Mary Hurst and Mrs. Anna Schaefer.

The first name chosen was the Gertrude Heidegar Ladies Auxiliary, but later became known as the Ladies Auxiliary to the Vanport Volunteer Fire Department.

Since the beginning the women helped the men raise funds for fire fighting equipment by making applebutter, homemade soups and sold other homemade items.

The present officers are Mrs. Pat Schaefer, president; Mrs. Catherine Berger, vice president; Mrs. Nina McCauley, secretary; Mrs. Augusta Brown, assistant secretary and Mrs. Joyce Hostetler, treasurer.
