Vanport Fire Department

In a tavern, then called "Beaver Tavern" a group of men including Ralph Taylor, Ott Burnett, Al Eller, Harry Edwards, Wes Gordon, Paul Beggs and Wes Singleton, decided to have a volunteer fire department; in 1934 this took place.

They needed money, so they collected nickels to dollars, women baked lots and lots of pies. These ladies were Gertrude Eller, Gussie Brown, Fran Beggs, Ann Singleton, and many others. With this money they purchased a nine passenger Cadillac or Graham in Sewickley. In an old barn owned by McTaggart on State Avenue, Wes Singleton, Paul Beggs and Harry Edwards, converted it into a fire truck. Their first fire experience was at the McTaggart home, where they pumped water from Two Mile Creek. Beggs fell through the roof. He wasn't badly injured. Other men who joined the group were our present Fire Chief's father-in-law M. C. Harton, Glen Reed, Harry Drear, Sam Starkweather, Willoghby and Keppan. They got their official charter in 1935. Ernest Brown was also a member' and is today. Township Commissioners at the time were Starkweather, Taylor, Reed and Moore.
