EARLY ROCHESTER HOTELS
Milestones Vol 11 No 2--Spring 1986

The Lincoln Hotel was once a principle hotel in Rochester, operated and managed by W.F. Workman.

His connection with the hotel dates back to 1910 when he became sole owner.

Under his supervision a number of modern changes were made. His plan for a large addition was completed and the Lincoln Hotel was among the leading up-to-date and reasonably price hotels in western Pennsylvania.

Mr. Workman made his home in Rochester and had been identified in the financial upbuilding of the town through his conception of future developments.

Alfred Pons was manager of the Lincoln Dining Room, which was part of the Lincoln Hotel.

The dining room was a popular resort among the town leaders and travelers along the Lincoln Highway.

Previous to settling in Rochester, Mr. Pons was manager of the Nixon Cafe one of the most popular dining rooms in Pittsburgh.


Lincoln Hotel

The Hotel Rochester was owned by Elizabeth Strayer and managed by Caroline Farrow.

The hotel was in the European Plan located at the corner of New York and Rochester avenues.

It was at one time operated by R.A. Strayer under the ownership of W.F. Graham.

The Hotel Rochester was a popular resort for the traveling public.


Hotel Rochester

The Liebler Restaurant was located at 73 New York Avenue and was part of the Hotel Rochester.

Jack Liebler owner of the establishment gave satisfactory service and was very successful in the endeavor.

Prior to his purchase of the restaurant he was engaged in the same business at Butler, Pennsylvania.

Customers at the restaurant are both local and transient.

The Doncaster House, Richard Doncaster, proprietor, was located on Rochester Avenue, during the early days of the town. Many a traveler stopped at this hotel considered by the transit public as a firstclass hotel with moderate prices.

The hotel was constructed in 1872 and stayed under the management of the Doncaster family.


Dorchester Hotel

The St. James Hotel, George Hays, proprietor, was located on Water Street. Its history dates back to the organization of the borough in 1849. The hotel was once known as the Pavilion.

Not mentioned in the original article was the very popular Leaf Hotel pictured below which was built by William Leaf around 1932.
