The drug store in Freedom was the original site of the Phillips Bentel Bank in 1876.
The Bentels owned the Excelsoir Oil Works in Freedom. In 1879 the oil company was reorganized by Stephen A. Craig and H. S. McConnell under the name of the Freedom Oil Co.
The Bentel Bank served the early businesses and merchants of Freedom, including the boat yard, saw mill, stove foundry, wagon factory, memorial stone company, the oil works, a coffin company and a ice plant.
Over the years other establishments occupied the building including Gusty Mengel's Butcher Shop. The last business was this drug store. The building was torn down for the Freedom bypass..
To the right of the store is a Ginko tree which is a living fossil from the Triassic period. Several of these trees were along Third Avenue in Freedom. PennDOT spared this tree which is still standing.
