The History of the Freedom Schools

Freedom was at one time divided into three school districts: Freedom, Saint Clair, and Vicary.

The western line of the borough to Dutchman's Run made up the Freedom district. The first school was located at Virtue and Betz streets. The next school was held in the second story of the building at Mine Street and Fourth Avenue. About the same time, a four-room brick building was erected where the present Liberty Building (old high school) stands. It was the Concord Freedom Academy, privately owned, and was later used by the public for an elementary school.

The first school in Saint Clair (Dutchman's Run to 12th Street) was a one-room frame building on Eighth Street near the run. (During heavy rains, the students had to move to a nearby flour mill.) The second school was a two-room frame building on Tenth Street and Fourth Avenue, where the Central Building now stands.

The first school in Vicary, which is now the First Ward, was a one-room frame building near the present athletic field. In 1909, a one-room brick building was erected on Fifth Avenue and 15th Street.

By 1896, Saint Clair had annexed Vicary and were consolidated with Freedom. This same year, the old Presbyterian Church was transformed into Freedom's first public school. It stood next to the Old Academy Building. In 1903, the Central Building was erected at Tenth Street and Fourth Avenue and the high school was transferred to it. In 1913, Liberty School was built and used as a high school. Due to a growing enrollment, the Old Academy and old Presbyterian Church were razed in 1928. A new high school was erected on their sites in 1930.

Conway and New Sewickley later joined with Freedom to form the Freedom Area School District. In 1960, a new high school was built on Eighth Avenue (now the junior high school). A new wing was added onto that building in 1964. The school district continued to grow and eventually outgrew the high school building and a new one was erected in 1971 nearby. It is the current high school building. Total enrollment for grades K-12 is 2914.
